Caterpillar Inc. has announced updates to its mid-sized asphalt compactor range. The Cat CB7, CB8 and CB10 asphalt compactors build upon the established success of their predecessors, introducing edge-management options, an optional cab, split drums and a new mapping display.
Enhanced Comfort and Performance
Effective asphalt compaction is crucial for project success, with meeting density and smoothness specifications being paramount for profitability. Operator alertness and efficiency are pivotal in achieving effective rolling patterns across the entire surface. Features such as the AM/FM Bluetooth Radio and heated seat, combined with spacious seating and legroom, unobstructed sightlines, and climate control functions, enable operators to perform at their peak.
Edge Management Options
Effective management of unconfined edges is key to optimizing density and improving road quality. The vertical edge from the cut-off wheel provides a stable face for joint matching on subsequent paving passes, while bevel edge options offer smoother transitions on and off the paved surface. Contractors can choose from three versions to meet specific job site requirements.
Compaction Control Mapping Display
The new mapping display offers improved on-screen visuals and touchscreen capability for simplified setup. Cat Compact enables operators to visualize coverage area while recording pass-count and temperature data. Leveraging infrared temperature sensors and GPS mapping, the system keeps operators informed of mat temperatures, machine position, pass-count, and coverage. This intuitive system enhances nighttime performance and facilitates data capture for future analysis and quality control documentation. When paired with drum edge and surface lighting, Cat Compact extends workday hours and boosts daily production.
Quality Compaction During Turns
Negotiating tight turns on hot asphalt can cause mat tearing, leading to quality issues. The optional dual split-drum feature on the front drum addresses this by reducing the speed of the inner drum half, eliminating tears during maneuvering around obstacles or compacting tight turns. This feature is particularly beneficial for parking lots, driveway approaches, and similar applications requiring frequent turns.
