Altec Industries in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, has donated $95,000 to introduce Hardin County Schools' eighth-grade students to welding careers. The partnership between Altec and the school district was highlighted during the recent Hardin County Schools Board of Education meeting.
The donation will fund the We Build It Better curriculum in all five of the district's middle schools. This 18-week program covers precision and accuracy, design and 3D printing, hand and power tools, electricity and fiber optics, programming and coding, business concepts, marketing and leadership principles.
Aligned with the district's career pathways, the program aims to help students identify their strengths and consider potential careers. Altec Industries' interest in the curriculum, particularly its potential to prepare students for advanced manufacturing careers, led to the partnership. The company plans to expand the curriculum to include welding careers.
Set to launch this school year, the program has completed teacher training and equipment installation, impacting approximately 1,000 students.
