3M (NYSE: MMM) https://www.3m.com/, made a significant leadership announcement today, revealing that William M. "Bill" Brown will take the helm as chief executive officer, effective May 1, 2024. Brown will succeed Michael Roman, who, in turn, will transition to the role of Executive Chairman of the 3M Board of Directors, with both appointments becoming effective on May 1, 2024.
"Bill's strong track record as a CEO for a global technology company makes him the right leader for 3M," said Roman. "He brings a wealth of experience in strategic leadership, innovation, and operational excellence to 3M. Brown, aged 61, previously served as Chairman of the Board and CEO of L3Harris Technologies, a player in aerospace and defense technology solutions. He held various leadership positions within Harris Corporation before its merger with L3 Technologies. His impressive career also includes a tenure at United Technologies Corporation (UTC).
Educationally, Brown holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Villanova University, as well as an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He has also held prominent positions, such as Chair of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Board of Governors.
In his new role as Executive Chairman, Roman will continue to chair 3M's Board of Directors, leveraging his extensive 35-year tenure with the company to provide strategic guidance. Roman has served as 3M's CEO since July 2018.
Additionally, 3M announced that the Board of Directors has waived the mandatory retirement age of 65 years for both Roman and Brown, underscoring their continued value and contributions to the company.
