I've been thinking about opportunity a lot lately.
We are nothing without an opportunity. You and I would be nowhere had we never gotten an opportunity to prove ourselves.
Sure, I worked my a…rse off for every opportunity I've been given, and totally feel like I earned each one, but I'd still be nowhere had I never been given those opportunities.
Why have I been thinking about "opportunity" so much lately?
Good question. Thanks for asking!
I think it's because I recently completed several long hiring processes to round out Catalyst Communications Network's editorial team.
Throughout the countless number of interviews conducted, I met with many talented, experienced people. Having the deciding vote on who the company would or wouldn't ultimately hire for my team is not something I took lightly. In fact, I approached those decisions as if it was my job on the line.
Actually, come to think of it, I approach every day that I log in to work as if my job is on the line.
Why? Because I care deeply about my career and the opportunity that Catalyst Communications Network's CEO, Shae McBride, and Vice President of Operations, Mark Lomas, have given me. I care deeply about my career and everyone who has given me an opportunity to prove myself along the way.
Gosh, and it will make me so proud — I'll probably even tear up a little — if someone, someday, holds me in the same regard for giving them the same opportunity that has been given to me. And, yes, I care deeply for everyone on my team who makes my job much easier than it would be without them.
What I think I'm trying to say is: Pay it forward; give someone an opportunity. Even if they don't have years of experience, even if they're not the most qualified person for the job — remember, you can't teach passion, desire or hunger, but there's nothing you can't teach someone who would do just about anything for an opportunity to prove themselves.
Caring deeply about one's career matters.
It matters a lot.
