Construct a Spooktacular Costume

Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start “building” memories with a construction-inspired outfit.

Whether you’re dressing a construction-obsessed child or looking for something creative and unique, we’ve got some ideas for you!

Here, you’ll find costume sets, do-it-yourself (DIY) ideas and even some punny options to help you construct the perfect and memorable Halloween look.

Construction Worker Costumes

Dress your little construction worker in a play costume set, complete with hard hat, toy hammer and saw. Pair it with a flannel, jeans (or overalls), work boots and a bright safety vest to make your child feel like they’re on the jobsite, ready to build!

An adult construction worker Halloween costume kit offers a practical, yet playful look. The kit includes a high-visibility safety vest, plastic yellow hard hat and goggles. Complete the look with a white undershirt, sturdy blue jeans, steel-toe boots and a hammer in hand.

Construction Costume for Pets

Don’t forget to involve your furry friend in the Halloween festivities. Buy a miniature high-visibility vest to add cuteness and safety to the construction-inspired costume, complete with “hard” hat. Accessorize the look with tool chew toys. This adorable costume will make your pet stand out as one of the safest trick-or-treaters on the block!

Construction Family Halloween Costumes

Get the whole family involved with creative construction-themed outfits. Each family member chooses from one of the following (or make up your own!):

  • A construction worker (mentioned earlier)
  • A construction cone (mentioned on the next page)
  • A traffic light (Dress in all black and tape three circles — red, yellow and green; cut from construction paper — to your chest and abdomen.)
  • A pile of rubble (This one’s great for kids pulled in a wagon. Surround the child with “rubble.”  This could be a bunch of blown up gray balloons, bunched up gray felt or fabric.)

Have an expecting mama in the mix? In theory, you’re kind of like a construction zone as you “build” a baby.  Tape an “under construction sign” on your belly and wrap yourself in caution tape. Dress the rest of the family in construction gear such as hard hats, vests and tools.

Construction Cone Costume

Alert drivers and other trick-or-treaters of your presence with this costume designed to stand out (literally!). The construction cone outfit is made with vibrant, durable and soft fabric, for all night comfort.

Color options include orange and green. It even glows in black light!

Caution Tape Costume

Caution! This costume is both witty, bright, fun and fashion-forward. If that sounds like you read on.

Strike a pose this Halloween season wrapped up in caution tape — not really … this three-piece costume set includes a one-piece polyester and spandex blend jumpsuit (no actual caution tape wrapping required), black glasses and a matching handbag. Take caution, however, as you might witness a few giggles throughout the night.

Zombie Construction Worker Costume

Halloween just wouldn’t be complete without a zombie  — a construction worker zombie, of course! Get yourself a realistic (and slightly disturbing) zombie mask for an evening of screams. To complete the look, wear a white undershirt, a high-visibility vest, a hard hat and douse yourself in fake blood. Further the gore with a “bloodied” wrench or hammer … and don’t forget to walk with a limp.

Now that’s dead funny!

Punny Costumes

Do you want to add a touch of humor and creativity to your Halloween costume? Check out our punny crane costume ideas below.

  1. 1. “The only bird at a construction site is a crane.” To pull this punny costume off, dress up like a crane (the bird). You can either wear a shirt like the one pictured here or go all out in bird-like attire — think feathers and a beak. Get creative! Throw on a hard hat and your outfit is complete.
  2. “I’m the loudest piece of construction equipment — the boom lift!” This Halloween costume is simple: Wear a high-visibility vest and tape a sign on your chest that says “BOOM!” When someone asks, “What are you?” Reply with the pun above.
  3. “I’m going in-crane (“insane”)!” Dress up in this straitjacket costume and add a construction vest or hard hat. Tussle your hair a bit so you’re “in-crane!”
  4. “This career really has its ups and downs.” Wear construction-related gear (high-visibility vest, hard hat, toolbelt, etc.) and post two arrows on your chest and belly. One points up, the other points down.

DIY Costumes

  1. Bob the Builder. This one is easy and budget friendly. All you need is an orange or red plaid shirt, blue jean overalls, toolbelt with tools, hard hat and steel-toed boots. Throughout the night, shout “Can we fix it?!” and reply with, “Yes we can!”
  2. Construction Worker (on a budget) If a construction-themed Halloween outfit set isn’t in your budget, try this wallet-friendly DIY option instead. Attach a stuffed animal (or other plush item) to a fishing pole, stick or broom. Refer to it as your “load.” Beep loudly whenever you back-up or pivot.

That’s a wrap! In caution tape, of course.

We hope our list of construction-inspired Halloween costume ideas lift and inspire you this season. Whether you’re dressing your construction-loving kiddos, pets or yourself, there are plenty of options!

Here’s to a happy and safe Halloween!
